Landscaping Myths vs. Facts (UAE Edition)

Landscaping in the UAE is a topic that most people are unaware of and it is due to the area's harsh climate and extreme environmental conditions. The instances such as extreme heat, strong sunlight, desert sand, and lack of natural rainfall has made the outdoor plants in higher demands of water and energy; it has ultimately led the outdoor plants to be used purely for decorative and luxury purposes.  It is also obvious that a few house owners, real estate developers, as well as business owners, are reluctant to consider landscaping as they think that it will be very expensive, require too much water, and hence a maintenance nightmare.

Myth 1: Landscaping Doesn’t Work in the UAE Climate

Fact: Proper planning makes landscaping thrive in desert conditions

One of the biggest myths is that landscaping cannot  be done in the harsh UAE environment. Most of the time, the misconception is blamed on the projects that failed because of poor planning, incorrect plant selection, or just disregarding the local conditions and in short  it is because of not knowing the real limit of the climate rather than the actual climatic constraints. Doing landscaping in the desert areas requires a very different method than the one used in the temperate climates, starting with an in depth site survey, soil treatment, and an environmental study to understand the landscape so as to be able to use it.

On one hand, the soil is good for proper drainage; while on the other hand, the soil is naturally deficient in essential nutrients and has little moisture retention ability over extended periods. Through soil conditioning methods such as the addition of organic matter, the introduction of stabilizing layers, and the enhancement of water holding capacity, a more suitable growth medium can be developed. At the same time, the choice of the native and acclimatized plant species is a very important factor. These plants have inherent resistance to heat, sunlight, salty soil, and low water supply. Therefore, they will be accustomed to it quickly, require hardly any care, and be a sustainable solution that will last in the long run while at the same time they bring aesthetic appeal throughout the year. In order to develop resilient, beneficial, and visually pleasing outdoor spaces in the UAE even under harsh weather conditions, it is necessary to ensure the landscape architecture be environmentally friendly and carried out with a modern irrigation system and proper maintenance.

Myth 2: Landscaping Requires Excessive Water

Fact: Smart irrigation drastically reduces water usage

Water usage is one of the biggest concerns associated with landscaping in the UAE. Many assume that keeping plants alive in desert conditions requires constant watering, leading to high utility bills and environmental strain. In reality, excessive water use is usually the result of inefficient irrigation systems and poor planning—not landscaping itself.

Myth 3: Only Artificial Grass Works in Dubai

Fact: Natural grass and plants can grow with the right care

Artificial grass is popular in Dubai due to its perceived convenience and low maintenance, but it is not the only viable option. Natural grass can thrive in the UAE when the right species is selected and supported by proper soil preparation and irrigation practices. Heat-tolerant grass varieties such as Bermuda, Paspalum, and Zoysia are well-adapted to local conditions and perform reliably under intense sunlight.

Natural turf offers benefits that artificial grass cannot replicate. It helps cool surrounding areas, reduces surface temperatures, and creates a more comfortable outdoor environment. While artificial turf may be suitable for certain high-traffic or low-maintenance areas, natural grass remains a practical and often superior option for residential lawns, play areas, and recreational spaces when designed and maintained correctly.

Myth 4: Landscaping Is Only for Luxury Villas

Fact: Landscaping suits villas, apartments, offices, and commercial spaces

Landscaping is often associated with large luxury villas, but its value extends far beyond high-end residential properties. Landscaping is scalable and adaptable, making it suitable for apartments, townhouses, office buildings, retail spaces, and hospitality environments. Even small outdoor interventions can significantly enhance the look and feel of a space.

Balcony gardens, rooftop terraces, vertical greenery, and planter-based designs allow greenery to be integrated into compact urban environments. For commercial properties, landscaping improves curb appeal, creates welcoming entrances, and enhances employee and customer experience. Affordable materials, modular designs, and phased execution make landscaping accessible without compromising functionality or aesthetics, regardless of property size.

Myth 5: Maintenance Is Too Expensive

Fact: Low-maintenance landscapes reduce long-term costs

The belief that landscaping leads to high maintenance costs often results from poorly planned designs that prioritize appearance over practicality. High-maintenance landscapes typically rely on unsuitable plant species, inefficient irrigation systems, or overly complex layouts that demand constant care.

Low-maintenance landscaping focuses on durability and efficiency. Native and drought-tolerant plants reduce watering, pruning, and replacement needs. Proper spacing allows plants to grow without competition, while automated irrigation systems minimize manual effort. Preventive maintenance—such as seasonal inspections and system checks—helps avoid costly repairs. Over time, a well-designed landscape becomes a predictable and manageable investment rather than an ongoing expense.

Myth 6: Landscaping Is Only About Plants

Fact: Landscaping includes hardscaping and outdoor living features

Landscaping is not limited to planting trees and shrubs. In the UAE, outdoor spaces are often designed as functional extensions of indoor living. Hardscaping elements such as pathways, seating areas, pergolas, decks, lighting, and water features play a critical role in usability and comfort.

Shaded structures make outdoor areas usable even during warmer months, while lighting enhances safety and extends functionality into the evening. Pathways improve circulation, and seating zones create areas for relaxation and social interaction. When combined with greenery, these elements transform outdoor spaces into cohesive environments designed for everyday living rather than purely visual appeal.

Myth 7: DIY Landscaping Is Always Cheaper

Fact: Professional landscaping saves time and prevents costly mistakes

Initially, a DIY landscaping project might seem to be a cheap method of adding beauty to your home but it usually overlooks the technical issues that are inherent in the reality of living in the UAE. Several mistakes such as choosing plants that are not suitable for the environment, installing watering systems that hardly work, or not properly digging the ground, are some of the common pitfalls and a few of these errors can be hidden for a while, but at some point, you will see dead plants resulting from the lack of nutrients in the soil and in addition, you will have to spend more money on repairs after you have wasted water unnecessarily.

Myth 8: Landscaping Has No Impact on Property Value

Fact: Well-designed landscapes increase property appeal and value

The exterior of a property is greatly influenced by landscaping. The outdoor spaces are the main factors that determine the first impression, and a neat landscape instantly delivers the message of high quality and attentiveness. In the case of a house, a higher buyer enthusiasm and a better habitation are the direct effects of the level of landscaping.

Greenery gives company premises a polished outlook which is very much inviting to people, and the people's experience gets generally enhanced by this. Besides, it has benefits like reduced stress as the greenery plays a pivotal role in maintaining low temperature and this will increase the duration of time spent outside. Different research findings prove that a beautifully decorated area is among the best ways to regain money; thus, a good landscape is more than just a nice face.
